Pope Leo XIV welcomed the two-week ceasefire concluded in the war involving Iran, while calling for continued negotiations to reach a lasting solution.
During his general audience at the Vatican, the Pope expressed his relief at the de-escalation, which came after several weeks of extreme tensions in the Middle East. He stressed the need to transform this truce into a genuine peace process.
A few hours earlier, the Pope had strongly criticized the President's threats Donald Trump with regard to the Iranian population, describing them as "unacceptable".
"Only a resumption of negotiations will bring an end to the war," he said, calling on all parties to prioritize the diplomatic route.
Since the beginning of the conflict, the Pope has established himself as one of the most critical voices against the military escalation, regularly advocating for a cessation of hostilities and a political solution.
This stance comes as the international community tries to consolidate a fragile ceasefire, seen as an opportunity to avoid an escalation of the conflict.
