Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Sunday as part of mediation efforts by Islamabad to try to reduce tensions between Iran and the United States.
According to Iranian state media, the discussions focused on the latest diplomatic developments related to the Iranian-American negotiations as well as the regional security situation.
Mohsin Naqvi, who arrived in Tehran on Saturday, is also scheduled to meet with other high-ranking Iranian officials. According to Pakistani sources, he is tasked with presenting several proposals aimed at reviving dialogue and facilitating a temporary agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistan has gradually established itself as a mediator between the two countries since the start of their open confrontation at the end of February. A temporary ceasefire was agreed upon on April 8, but negotiations subsequently slowed due to disagreements over its implementation and the evolving situation in the Middle East.
This diplomatic initiative comes as tensions remain high in the region. The mediators are seeking to prevent a resumption of hostilities and to create the conditions for a more lasting dialogue between the two adversaries.
Pakistani authorities hope that their efforts will break the current deadlock in the talks, although no concrete signs of major progress have yet been announced following the Tehran meeting.
