Tokyo chose to downplay the incident, preferring to emphasize the content of the meeting. Discussions will focus primarily on Australia's acquisition of Japanese Mogami-class frigates, as well as strengthening bilateral security cooperation.
This represents the highest level of engagement between the two capitals since the outbreak of what some media outlets have dubbed "melon-gate." Koizumi's presence in Canberra demonstrates the two governments' determination not to let this episode overshadow a strategic partnership considered a priority in the Indo-Pacific region.
