The Canadian labour market is surprising with strong job creation and a drop in unemployment.

Canada's economy added 87,800 jobs in May, while the unemployment rate fell to 6,6%, according to data released by Statistics Canada. These figures far exceeded analysts' expectations, who had anticipated a much more modest increase in employment and stable unemployment.

This increase marks the first real job creation since the beginning of 2026 and offsets nearly 80% of the losses recorded since January. It also represents the strongest monthly rebound in the Canadian labour market since October 2025, illustrating a more robust recovery than expected in an uncertain economic environment.

According to official data, job gains are concentrated exclusively in full-time positions, a signal generally interpreted as positive for labor market stability. Furthermore, youth unemployment fell by 0,9 percentage points to 13,4%, reflecting a partial improvement in job prospects.

These results contrast sharply with economists' forecasts, which predicted the creation of approximately 10,000 jobs and an unemployment rate remaining at 6,9%, its highest level in six months. The published figures thus demonstrate an unexpected resilience of the Canadian economy despite a fragile economic environment.

For over a year, Canada's labour market has been affected by trade tensions, particularly those related to tariffs imposed by the United States, as well as persistent uncertainty surrounding investment and hiring. Despite these headwinds, the latest data suggest a temporary recovery in labour market activity.
