The Kremlin accuses Europeans of having influenced Trump with "harmful ideas" at the G7 summit

The Kremlin said on Thursday that European leaders had likely exerted a negative influence on Donald Trump at the G7 summit this week. A senior advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin, however, stressed that the former US president remained a determined leader, committed to his own political convictions.

These statements come after a meeting described as "very positive" between Donald Trump and the Ukrainian president. Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the summit. Following this meeting, Trump stated that Russia should achieve peace with Ukraine, remarks which sparked some optimism among G7 leaders regarding the prospects for an agreement ending the conflict.

Kremlin foreign affairs advisor Yuri Ushakov stated that Trump likely received inaccurate information about the situation in Ukraine during his discussions with European leaders. According to him, Moscow is still awaiting a visit from US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, although no date has yet been set.

“One can assume that Trump has been influenced by harmful ideas. We understand that the Europeans are exerting a detrimental influence here,” Ushakov told Russian state television. He added, however, that Trump remained “a determined politician, true to his convictions.”

The Russian official also called for waiting to see how the diplomatic discussions unfold. According to him, some of Trump's statements have been made public, while other positions have yet to be revealed.

Furthermore, Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders argued to Trump that recent Ukrainian drone incursions deep into Russian territory had contributed to improving Kyiv's military position. This analysis was rejected by Yuri Ushakov, who called the claim "categorically false," illustrating once again the divide between Russian and Western positions on the evolution of the conflict.
