The IMF chooses Silvana Tenreyro as its new chief economist

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced Tuesday the appointment of Silvana Tenreyro as chief economist and director of its research department. She will succeed Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who is leaving the institution to resume his academic career, said IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, Silvana Tenreyro will officially take up her post on August 10. Of Argentinian, Italian, and British nationality, she will also serve as an economic advisor to the IMF, where she will be responsible for overseeing the institution's research and economic analysis.

An internationally renowned economist, Silvana Tenreyro has distinguished herself through her numerous academic publications. Between 2017 and 2023, she served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, participating in decisions relating to interest rates and the fight against inflation.

Previously, she worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and was also a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Mauritius. Her career has given her extensive experience in monetary policy and international macroeconomic issues.

The IMF notes that Silvana Tenreyro currently serves on Kristalina Georgieva's external advisory group and advises several public and private institutions on economic and financial matters. Her appointment comes at a time when the global economy continues to face significant challenges, including slowing growth, geopolitical tensions, and inflationary uncertainties.
