Wes Streeting reignited the Brexit debate by declaring that the UK's exit from the European Union had been a "catastrophic mistake" and asserting that the country could rejoin the EU "one day".
These comments come as Streeting positions himself as a potential rival to Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the upcoming Labour leadership race.
In a speech delivered in London, Wes Streeting declared that "Britain's future lies in Europe," bringing back to the forefront a subject that has become politically sensitive nearly ten years after the Brexit referendum.
His statements surprised several Labour Party officials, some of whom felt that the European question was no longer a priority for British voters.
The return of the debate could, however, benefit the anti-EU populist party of Nigel Farage and Reform UK, who continue to strongly advocate Brexit.
Another potential contender for the Labour leadership, Andy Burnham, downplayed the importance of the issue, claiming that Brexit was not a central concern for voters in the current campaign.
