The US military announced Sunday that it had found the body of a soldier who had been missing for several days during a military exercise in Morocco.

According to a statement from the US armed forces, a Moroccan rescue team discovered the remains of the soldier in the water on Saturday, less than 1,6 kilometers from where he disappeared on May 2 near a cliff in Cape Draa.

The soldier has been identified as Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., a platoon leader in a U.S. Army artillery unit. The exact circumstances of his disappearance were not immediately clear.

The US military stated that a second soldier is still missing and that search operations are actively continuing in the area.

The military personnel were participating in African Lion, described as the largest joint exercise organized by the U.S. Africa Command, AFRICOM. These maneuvers bring together U.S. forces, several NATO allies, and African partner countries.

The majority of the exercise is taking place in Morocco and involves approximately 5,000 participants from more than 40 countries, according to AFRICOM. These exercises aim in particular to strengthen military cooperation, operational capabilities, and coordination among the various participating armies.

The disappearance of the two soldiers prompted a major rescue operation involving Moroccan authorities and American forces deployed in the area. No further details have been released regarding the circumstances of the accident or the status of the search for the second missing soldier.
