The fragile ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia is already showing serious signs of collapse. Ukrainian officials stated on Monday that Russian drone strikes and clashes were continuing in several sectors of the front despite the agreement brokered under US mediation.
The ceasefire, scheduled from May 9 to 11, was announced on Friday as part of diplomatic efforts led by the US president. Donald Trump to try to end more than four years of war since the Russian invasion of 2022.
According to Ukrainian military and regional authorities, further Russian drone attacks were reported in the past 24 hours, while fighting continued on some parts of the front.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged on Sunday that Moscow appeared to have reduced massive air strikes and long-range missile launches, but accused Russian forces of continuing their ground offensives in several strategic areas where they are trying to advance.
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense also accuses Kyiv of violating the agreement. Moscow claims to have shot down 57 Ukrainian drones in the past 24 hours and asserts that it responded "symmetrically" to Ukrainian actions on the ground.
No detailed official update had yet been published by Russian authorities on Monday morning regarding the exact evolution of the military situation.
The rise in cross-accusations is fueling fears of a rapid collapse of the ceasefire, as Washington hoped to secure an extension of the truce in order to revive broader peace talks.
Since the beginning of the war, ceasefire attempts have consistently failed, with each side accusing the other of violations. Despite American diplomatic efforts, the fighting continues to claim lives and destabilize the entire region.
The future of negotiations now remains uncertain, as front lines remain active and mistrust between Kyiv and Moscow remains deep.
