Botswana has lost one of its most respected leaders: former president Festus Mogae has died at the age of 86.

Former Botswana president Festus Mogae has died at the age of 86, the Botswana government announced, declaring three days of national mourning in tribute to the man who was considered one of the most respected African leaders of his generation.

Festus Mogae led Botswana from 1998 to 2008, becoming the country's third president since independence. His departure from power in favor of his vice-president, Ian Khama, took place in a climate of political stability that was praised internationally.

An economist by training, Mogae was widely recognized for his prudent management of Botswana's economy, bolstered in particular by the country's significant diamond resources. Under his presidency, Botswana solidified its reputation as a stable democracy and a model of governance in Southern Africa.

He also made a lasting impression with his commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS at a time when Botswana had one of the highest infection rates in the world. Unlike many leaders of the era, Festus Mogae publicly acknowledged the scale of the health crisis and launched one of the most ambitious HIV programs on the African continent.

Born in Serowe in 1939, he studied in the United Kingdom before joining the civil service shortly after Botswana's independence in 1966. He subsequently held several key positions, including Minister of Finance and Vice President, before becoming President.

Beyond his national actions, Festus Mogae had also played a role on the international stage, notably as a United Nations special envoy for issues related to climate change.

His passing has sparked strong emotions in Botswana and several African capitals, where he remains associated with an image of a pragmatic, moderate leader committed to democratic institutions.
