The German army is exploring the use of artificial intelligence to improve the speed and efficiency of its decisions on the battlefield, drawing inspiration in particular from lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
According to Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, these technologies could analyze large volumes of data from drones and sensors in real time, much faster than current human capabilities.
The objective is to enable the armed forces to react more quickly to the adversary, by identifying patterns and proposing countermeasures based on similar situations observed in the past.
Today, some analyses require hundreds of people and several days of work. AI could significantly reduce these delays and offer a decisive strategic advantage.
However, military authorities insist that artificial intelligence will remain a decision-making aid, not a replacement for human judgment. Ultimate responsibility will continue to rest with the soldiers.
The development of these systems will also have to comply with NATO standards, with the possible integration of American technologies.
To train these tools, the German army plans to use data from the conflict in Ukraine as well as from its own military exercises.
This project illustrates the rapid evolution of military technologies and the growing importance of AI in modern defense strategies, in an international context marked by high-intensity conflicts.
