Germany is financing the purchase of 50,000 combat drones for Ukraine

Germany is financing the acquisition of 50,000 attack drones for Ukraine, in one of the largest drone purchases ever made by a Western government for Kyiv, a source close to the matter told Reuters.

This order is for FPV ("First Person View") drones, named ShrikeThe devices, manufactured by the Ukrainian company SkyFall, will be equipped with software developed by the American defense technology company Auterion. According to Auterion, the contract is worth approximately 90 million euros.

Some of the drones have already been delivered to Ukraine, the source said. These aircraft are designed to conduct precision attacks on the battlefield and are part of the increased Western military support for Kyiv in the face of the Russian invasion.

Since the start of the war with Russia more than four years ago, Ukraine has made drones a central element of its military strategy. The country now produces millions of devices each year, and its armed forces carry out thousands of strikes daily using unmanned aerial vehicles.

This new German funding illustrates the growing importance of drones in the conflict. By supporting the acquisition of 50,000 additional attack drones, Berlin is strengthening Ukraine's operational capabilities as fighting continues on multiple fronts and unmanned technologies play an increasingly crucial role in the war.
