Tunisia launches a gigantic one billion dollar project to transform Tunis-Carthage airport

Tunisia plans to invest approximately 3 billion dinars, or nearly one billion dollars, to expand and modernize Tunis-Carthage International Airport. This project aims to significantly increase the capacity of the country's main air hub as part of a strategy to modernize transport infrastructure.

According to the Tunisian Ministry of Transport, the expansion will increase the airport's annual capacity from approximately 5 million passengers to 18,5 million by 2031. This transformation should thus almost quadruple the volume of travelers that the infrastructure is able to handle each year.

The project has been included in the 2026 investment budget of the Civil Aviation and Airports Authority. Authorities hope that this modernization will support the growth of air traffic and strengthen Tunisia's position as a regional hub for international connections.

The government also clarified that it had decided to abandon, at least for the time being, the construction of a new airport. Authorities have ultimately opted for the expansion and modernization of the existing Tunis-Carthage airport, deemed faster and more efficient.

This project is part of a broader effort to improve the country's infrastructure and support the tourism sector, which is one of the pillars of the Tunisian economy.

With this expansion, the authorities hope to meet future growth in air traffic and support the country's economic development over the next decade.
