Russia classifies Stanford University as an "undesirable" organization

Russian authorities have added Stanford University to their list of so-called "undesirable" organizations, effectively banning all of the institution's activities within their territory. This decision also exposes individuals associated with the institution to legal prosecution.

The legislation stipulates that any form of collaboration, including the payment of tuition fees or the dissemination of content related to the organization, can be penalized. This measure now affects a growing number of foreign institutions.

An expanded list since the start of the conflict in Ukraine
Several universities and international NGOs are already on this list, including Yale, Berkeley, and organizations such as Greenpeace and Transparency International. This system, established in 2015, has been used more intensively in recent years.

Since the start of the offensive in Ukraine in 2022, Russian authorities have strengthened restrictions targeting civil society and foreign institutions, amid a tightening of political control and activities deemed sensitive.
