Moldovan President Maia Sandu appoints Eugeniu Osmochescu as interim Prime Minister

Moldovan President Maia Sandu appointed Deputy Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu as interim Prime Minister on Tuesday, following the surprise resignation of Alexandru Munteanu, announced on Friday.

According to a presidential decree, Eugeniu Osmochescu will officially take office on Wednesday. He previously held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization.

Before joining the Moldovan government, he worked at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank's private sector financing arm.

Alexandru Munteanu justified his resignation by stating that he could no longer perform his duties "in accordance with his convictions".

In a message posted on Facebook, he thanked his successor for accepting this responsibility and wished him "every success in this mission".

Maia Sandu indicated on Friday that she would consult with the various parliamentary groups in order to appoint a new head of government.

The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), the president's pro-European party, has a majority in Parliament, which has 101 seats.

Alexandru Munteanu was appointed Prime Minister after the September parliamentary elections, which were largely won by the PAS against a rival party that favoured closer ties with Russia.
