Poland is considering withdrawing Zelensky's highest national honor.

The Polish president said on Friday he wanted to consider withdrawing Poland’s highest honor from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after a decision by Kyiv to honor a Ukrainian nationalist organization involved in massacres of Poles during World War II.

This controversy comes at a time when Poland remains one of Ukraine's closest allies since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

Former Polish President Andrzej Duda awarded Zelensky the Order of the White Eagle in 2023, the country's highest decoration.

But Warsaw reacted strongly after Zelensky signed a decree renaming a Ukrainian special forces unit in homage to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).

For some Ukrainians, the UPA symbolizes the struggle for national independence against the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. However, this organization is also accused of having participated in the Volhynia massacres between 1943 and 1945.

According to Poland, approximately 100,000 Poles were killed by Ukrainian nationalists during the violence. Thousands of Ukrainians also perished in the reprisals.

The Polish president indicated that he wanted the relevant authorities to assess whether this Ukrainian decision is compatible with maintaining the distinction granted to Zelensky.

This case revives a historically sensitive issue between Warsaw and Kyiv, despite their close cooperation on military and diplomatic matters related to the war in Ukraine.
