Malaysia recovers valuable artworks linked to the 1MDB scandal

Malaysia has announced it has repatriated several valuable works of art, including a print by the painter Pablo Picasso, as part of efforts to recover funds misappropriated in the 1MDB sovereign wealth fund financial scandal.

According to the country's anti-corruption agency, four works of art have been successfully recovered. They had been acquired using funds from a vast embezzlement scheme involving billions of dollars between 2009 and 2014.

For more than a decade, Malaysian authorities have been trying to recover approximately $4,5 billion embezzled in this case, considered one of the world's biggest financial scandals. Investigations, conducted in part with support from the United States, have revealed that these funds were used to finance a lavish lifestyle.

Among the identified expenses are the purchase of luxury hotels, jewelry, but also valuable works of art, often hidden abroad to evade the authorities.

This repatriation represents a further step forward in Kuala Lumpur's efforts to recover assets linked to 1MDB and restore confidence in its institutions, following a scandal that has profoundly impacted the country's political and economic life.
