As of 15 p.m. on Saturday, Australia had 215 confirmed cases of H5 avian influenza nationwide. However, the detection of the virus in the Murray-Darling Basin is of particular interest to scientists.

"This should sound the alarm for governments," warns one expert, who points out that the presence of the pathogen in this region raises fears of rapid spread among inland bird colonies, just before the spring breeding season.

The birds of the Murray-Darling Basin are already facing a precarious situation: predation by introduced wild animals, insufficient water supply to vital wetlands, and progressive habitat destruction. The arrival of such a deadly disease further exacerbates their plight.

Amid these health concerns, South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas visited Apple's headquarters in the United States, where he met with outgoing CEO Tim Cook, in the context of the ban on social media for minors.
