So-called "wing-based" combat drones emerged as one of the major attractions at the Berlin Air Show, illustrating the rapid transformation of European military strategies in the face of new threats. Designed to accompany fighter jets on missions, these autonomous or semi-autonomous aircraft are now considered a key element of the continent's future defense capabilities.
The war in Ukraine has accelerated interest in these technologies. The conflict has demonstrated the growing importance of drones, electronic warfare, and connected systems on the battlefield. In response, European and American defense industries are investing heavily in the development of devices capable of supporting manned aircraft while reducing risks to aircrews.
These drones, officially called collaborative combat aircraft, can perform a wide range of missions. They are designed to carry sensors, jam enemy systems, gather intelligence, and even transport additional weapons. Their role is to operate in coordination with modern fighter jets to increase their effectiveness and survivability.
At the Berlin trade fair, several industrial groups presented their projects to the German army and other potential customers. Among them were Airbus, Boeing, Helsing, and General Atomics.
The MQ-28 Ghost Bat drone, developed by Boeing in Australia, could enter service with the German Luftwaffe as early as 2029. Meanwhile, Airbus is continuing the development of its U760b Ravenstorm model, but it is not expected to be operational before the beginning of the next decade.
Germany and France are also exploring new avenues of cooperation in this area. After abandoning their previous joint fighter jet project, the two countries are now considering the development of advanced drone systems and data networks to connect different military platforms in the field.
As defense budgets increase across Europe, "wing" drones are emerging as one of the most promising technologies for the coming years. Their ability to combine artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and operational support could profoundly change how European air forces conduct their future operations.
