Kyiv under a hail of fire: a massive Russian attack leaves at least four dead

Russia launched a massive air attack on Kyiv overnight Saturday to Sunday, combining missiles and explosive drones, killing at least four people and injuring dozens in the Ukrainian capital and its region, according to local authorities.

Violent explosions rocked Kyiv shortly after 1 a.m., plunging many residents into panic. Warning sirens had sounded minutes earlier following a warning from the Ukrainian air force about a possible Russian launch of an Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile.

The strikes hit several residential areas of the capital, causing significant material damage. Buildings, civilian infrastructure, and numerous vehicles were damaged, while rescue workers continued throughout the night searching for possible victims under the rubble.

Images broadcast from Kyiv show major fires and thick columns of smoke rising in various parts of the city. Local authorities reported that dozens of people were injured, some seriously.

This attack is among the most significant carried out against the Ukrainian capital in recent months. Moscow has been steadily intensifying its long-range strikes against major Ukrainian cities as part of the war that has raged for more than four years.

Ukrainian officials accuse Russia of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure to terrorize the population and overwhelm the country's air defense systems. Moscow, for its part, claims to be targeting strategic military objectives.

The new offensive comes as tensions remain extremely high on several fronts and Ukraine continues to demand increased military support from its Western allies in the face of escalating Russian bombing.
