A shooting followed by a hostage situation left at least six dead and several wounded in Kyiv, where law enforcement ultimately killed the suspect after unsuccessful negotiations. Ukrainian authorities are suggesting a possible terrorist act, without yet determining the motives.
According to initial reports, a man opened fire at close range on passersby in the Holosiivskyi district before barricading himself inside a supermarket and taking hostages. Police intervened after approximately 40 minutes of negotiations, ending the situation by killing the assailant.
The toll is heavy: six people were killed, some in the street and others from their injuries. Fourteen people were also injured, according to the president. Volodymyr Zelenskywho mentioned the death of a hostage during the attack.
Among the victims was a couple whose 12-year-old son was injured, according to Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko. A large number of emergency personnel were deployed to the scene, where images show the removal of bodies and the treatment of the injured.
The suspect, described as a man of Russian origin who had lived in eastern Ukraine, has not yet had his motive clearly established. Security services have opened a terrorist investigation to shed light on the circumstances of the attack.
Shootings of this kind remain rare in Ukraine, a country more frequently confronted with airstrikes related to the conflict with Russia. This event deeply shocked the population and reignited concerns about internal security.
