British Prime Minister Keir Starmer saw his big political day overshadowed on Wednesday by growing challenges to his leadership, at the very moment the UK was celebrating the official opening of Parliament.
The traditional ceremony, marked by King Charles III's speech outlining the government's legislative program, was intended to allow Starmer to regain the initiative after several difficult weeks. But speculation about a possible internal rebellion within the Labour Party largely dominated the political news.
According to Reuters, several Labour MPs are now calling for the Prime Minister's resignation following the party's heavy losses in recent local and regional elections. The situation has become even more tense after reports in The Times claimed that Health Secretary Wes Streeting was considering resigning to prepare for a possible leadership bid.
This prospect poses a serious threat to Starmer, who is already politically weakened. Wes Streeting is considered one of the most popular and influential figures in the government, and appears to some elected officials as a credible alternative to the current Prime Minister.
In this context, the King's speech, usually used to highlight the government's priorities, took a back seat. The British media focused primarily on internal tensions within the Labour Party and the possibility of a leadership change before the summer.
Keir Starmer is nevertheless trying to resist calls for his resignation and maintains that he wants to continue his program to "improve the country." But the current crisis now threatens to paralyze his government at the very moment when it was seeking to project stability and authority to Parliament and the public.
