Italy: The suspected perpetrator of the Modena car-ramming attack is not believed to be linked to terrorism

The man suspected of driving into a crowd in Modena, northern Italy, has no links to terrorist groups, according to Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi.

The attack, which occurred on Saturday, May 16, 2026, left eight people injured, four of them seriously, after a vehicle struck pedestrians in the city center.

In an interview with the Italian press, Matteo Piantedosi indicated that, according to the initial investigations, nothing suggests a terrorist motive or affiliation with an extremist organization.

Italian authorities are nevertheless continuing the investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, including the driver's motives and the conditions under which he lost control of his vehicle or deliberately targeted the crowd.
