The Israeli government has approved a plan to transform the former UNRWA complex in East Jerusalem into a new site dedicated to defense activities and official institutions.
According to a joint announcement by the Ministry of Defense and the Jerusalem municipality, the project will include a military recruitment office, a museum dedicated to the army, and the offices of the Minister of Defense.
The site previously belonged to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which ceased operations there after being ordered to leave.
Israeli authorities had already demolished several structures in the complex in January, after taking control of the site the previous year. This decision drew international criticism, with some arguing that it violated international law.
The Israeli Defense Minister described the project as a symbol of "sovereignty and security," while UNRWA declined to comment on the planned new use of its former premises.
East Jerusalem remains a territory with a disputed status: Israel considers the city its unified capital, while the UN and the majority of the international community consider it occupied territory since 1967.
