Israel: Supreme Court orders government to answer questions about the fate of 14 Palestinian doctors detained in Gaza

The Israeli Supreme Court has given the government until Tuesday to respond to a request for the release of 14 Palestinian doctors from Gaza detained without charge or trial, according to the Israeli organization Doctors for Human Rights (PHR).

The association indicated that the judiciary had ordered the government to respond regarding the conditions of detention of these practitioners, among whom is Dr. Husam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, located in the northern Gaza Strip.

According to the doctor's lawyers, he was repeatedly beaten in detention and suffers from serious, life-threatening health problems. His lawyer, Nasser Awdeh, claims that his condition is rapidly deteriorating as a result of the physical assaults he allegedly endured.

The request was filed on April 30. According to Doctors for Human Rights, the Israeli government had repeatedly obtained extensions to respond before the Supreme Court set a final ultimatum for Tuesday.

The organization also requests that the court allow a visit to Dr. Abu Safiya by a judge, a cardiologist and a team of lawyers to assess his health and conditions of detention.

This case comes at a time when the conditions of detention of Palestinians arrested in the context of the conflict in Gaza are receiving increasing attention from human rights organizations, which are demanding more transparency and respect for judicial guarantees.
