At least four French tourists are missing after devastating floods struck the border between Nepal and Tibet. The Nepal Tourism Board currently lists 517 foreign visitors among the missing. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet confirmed the number of French nationals among the missing.
At the time of the disaster, 80 French citizens had registered their presence in Nepal with diplomatic authorities. Other unregistered travelers may also be in the affected areas. Search operations are continuing in this region, which is particularly popular with hikers and mountaineers heading towards Mount Everest.
More than 1,300 people are still missing.
Authorities report at least 180 deaths, including 177 in Nepal and three in the Chinese part of Tibet. More than 1,300 people remain missing. Among the foreign tourists being sought are 178 Indians, 65 Americans, 53 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 33 Britons, 25 Canadians, 15 Australians, and 12 Israelis.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the disaster was caused by a glacier collapse. This collapse released a powerful wall of water and mud, triggering a magnitude 5,2 earthquake and numerous landslides. In Nepal, the wave particularly devastated the valleys of the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers, sweeping away homes and their inhabitants.
