Six people were found dead Sunday in a freight car in Laredo, a city near the border between the United States and Mexico, local authorities announced.
According to Laredo police, the bodies were discovered by a Union Pacific Railroad employee in a remote rail yard. Police and firefighters who arrived at the scene later confirmed the deaths of all six individuals.
Local police investigator Joe Baeza stated that the exact causes of death had not yet been determined. No information has been released regarding the identity or nationality of the victims.
Authorities stated that no survivors had been found in the carriage and that the investigation was continuing to understand the circumstances of the tragedy.
This discovery is reminiscent of several similar tragedies that have occurred in recent years near the US-Mexico border, where migrants regularly attempt to reach the United States in extremely dangerous conditions.
In 2022, 53 people were found dead in an abandoned truck on the outskirts of San Antonio after the vehicle's air conditioning system failed, in one of the deadliest episodes linked to migrant trafficking in the United States.
Authorities have not yet established an official link between Sunday's discovery and clandestine migration operations, but the site's proximity to the Mexican border is already fueling numerous questions.
This new tragedy comes at a time when migration issues remain at the heart of the American political debate, particularly in border states facing strong migratory pressure and the activity of smuggling networks.
