Hungary: Vance accuses the EU of electoral interference in support of Orbán

US Vice President JD Vance accused the European Union of "shameful" interference in the Hungarian elections, during a visit to Budapest intended to support Prime Minister Viktor Orbán days before a crucial vote.

Speaking at a press conference, JD Vance denounced what he considers one of the "worst examples of foreign interference" in an election campaign. He claimed that European institutions had attempted to influence the vote by exerting economic pressure on Hungary.

The US vice president also accused "Brussels bureaucrats" of seeking to weaken the Hungarian economy, reduce its energy independence and raise prices for consumers, with the aim of harming Viktor Orbán.

This visit is part of a broader political strategy, the camp of Donald Trump Orbán's re-election is considered a key issue for his ideological allies in Europe. The election, scheduled for a few days from now, is expected to be particularly close according to polls.

For its part, the Hungarian opposition rejects these accusations and maintains that the country's future should be decided by the voters, without outside influence. This sequence illustrates the growing tensions surrounding the election, in a context of political polarization and significant international stakes.
