Hezbollah: Naim Qassem calls on Beirut to cancel talks with Israel in Washington

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem on Monday urged the Lebanese government to cancel a planned meeting in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli representatives, calling the talks "unnecessary" in the current context of tensions.

In a televised address, Naim Qassem affirmed that his movement would continue to oppose Israeli strikes against Lebanese territory. He denounced any attempt at dialogue, which he deemed inappropriate as long as hostilities continued.

The meeting in question is scheduled for Tuesday between the Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the United States. It is part of a series of diplomatic initiatives aimed at easing tensions and paving the way for a ceasefire in the region.

For his part, the Lebanese foreign minister defended holding these talks, arguing that they offer an opportunity to exert pressure for a ceasefire. Beirut is thus seeking to use this channel to try to reduce the violence.

These differences illustrate the internal tensions in Lebanon over the strategy to adopt in the face of the ongoing conflict, between supporters of diplomatic dialogue and advocates of a harder line towards Israel.

In an explosive regional context, the outcome of these talks could have significant repercussions on the stability of Lebanon and the evolution of hostilities in the Middle East.
