Han Seong-sook is poised to become the first female South Korean prime minister in twenty years.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has appointed Han Seong-sook as Prime Minister, a move that could mark a historic milestone for South Korea.

If her nomination is approved by Parliament, Han Seong-sook will become the first woman to hold this position in two decades.

Han, the current Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises and Startups, is also known for having previously led Naver, one of South Korea's leading technology groups. His experience in the digital sector was highlighted by the presidency to justify this choice.

According to the presidential chief of staff, Han is expected to play a significant role in the national strategy to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence and new technologies. The government hopes to leverage his experience to enhance the country's competitiveness in innovative sectors.

The presidency also believes that it can help transform export-driven economic growth and the semiconductor industry into more inclusive growth, benefiting small businesses and entrepreneurs more.

In South Korea, the Prime Minister primarily performs administrative and government coordination functions within a presidential system where most of the executive power is held by the head of state.

This appointment comes as Seoul seeks to strengthen its position in the global competition around artificial intelligence, semiconductors and advanced technologies.
