Russia has announced it has handed over the bodies of 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in action to Ukraine, in an exchange for 41 bodies of Russian military personnel. This information was reported by the RBC news agency, citing Russian MP Shamsail Saraliyev.
This exchange is part of a regular practice between the two countries since the beginning of the conflict, consisting of returning the bodies of combatants killed in action. These operations, often conducted discreetly, constitute one of the few areas of cooperation between Moscow and Kyiv despite the ongoing hostilities.
The number of bodies handed over by Russia in this exchange appears particularly high, illustrating the scale of the human losses suffered in the war. Ukrainian authorities had not immediately confirmed these figures at the time of the announcement.
These repatriations allow families to identify and bury their loved ones in a conflict marked by intense and prolonged fighting on multiple fronts. They also demonstrate a minimum level of humanitarian coordination between the two sides.
The war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been ongoing for more than two years, continues to take a heavy human toll, with losses difficult to verify independently due to access restrictions and communication challenges on both sides.
In this context, these exchanges of remains remain one of the few concrete gestures aimed at mitigating, at the margin, the human consequences of a conflict that remains without prospect of a quick resolution.
