Greece: Government reshuffle amid EU agricultural aid fraud scandal

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reshuffled his government as a European investigation intensifies into a vast alleged fraud related to agricultural subsidies.

This case, which has been shaking the country for several months, concerns livestock farmers accused of falsifying pasture ownership in order to fraudulently receive millions of euros in European Union subsidies. According to prosecutors, these practices were facilitated by government officials and politicians.

The investigation has recently taken a new turn. The European Public Prosecutor's Office has asked the Greek Parliament to lift the immunity of at least 11 members of parliament, including some ministers, in order to further investigate their alleged role in this scheme.

This scandal had already led to resignations within the government and prompted the European Union to impose a heavy fine on Greece for mismanagement of agricultural funds by its payment agency.

In this tense context, Kyriakos Mitsotakis appointed Margaritis Schinas, former Vice-President of the European Commission, to the strategic post of Minister of Agriculture. This appointment aims to restore the government's credibility and reassure Brussels.

The reshuffle comes as the executive branch tries to contain the political repercussions of this affair, which weakens the majority and fuels criticism from the opposition.

Beyond the Greek case, this issue highlights the persistent challenges of control and transparency in the management of European funds, a major issue for the trust of citizens and institutions.
