At least two Palestinians were killed Sunday in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, according to local medical officials. The attack occurred near Al-Azhar University, in western Gaza City, as the two victims were traveling in a car.
Health officials reported that several other people were also injured in the strike. The identities of the two victims were not immediately confirmed at the time of the announcement. Images broadcast from the scene showed civilians carrying an injured person after the explosion.
This incident is considered the deadliest attack in the Palestinian enclave since the launch, a week earlier, of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Violence in Gaza has decreased since the start of this regional offensive, but several Palestinians have still been killed in recent days during Israeli operations.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the strike. The exact circumstances of the attack and the nature of the target therefore remain unclear.
Israel and Hamas are bound by a ceasefire agreement that came into effect last October, brokered with US mediation. Despite this agreement, violence continues almost daily in the Gaza Strip.
Each side regularly accuses the other of violating the terms of the truce, while tensions remain high in the Palestinian enclave in a regional context marked by military escalation between Israel, the United States and Iran.
