The Peace Council established by the American president Donald Trump plans to create a pilot humanitarian zone in the Gaza Strip in order to revive its peace plan, regardless of a possible agreement with Hamas on the second phase of the process, an official from this body indicated.
According to this source, the Council has identified several safe zones that could accommodate tens of thousands of Palestinians from Gaza. The goal is to improve access to essential goods and services in these areas to meet the humanitarian needs of residents who choose to settle there. The official specified that the program would be based on voluntary participation and that beneficiaries would be selected, without revealing the exact location of this future zone.
This initiative comes as the humanitarian situation remains extremely difficult in the Gaza Strip, largely destroyed after two years of war triggered by Hamas attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023.
Following the ceasefire agreement reached last year, Donald Trump presented a peace plan that included increased humanitarian aid, the establishment of an administration run by a group of Palestinian technocrats, the disarmament of Hamas, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.
However, this plan has stalled. The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), tasked with managing the territory according to this proposal, has still not been deployed to the Palestinian enclave. The pilot humanitarian zone project thus appears as an attempt to revive the process in a context where political negotiations remain deadlocked.
