Gaza: The World Bank defends its role in Trump's Peace Council

World Bank President Ajay Banga defended his institution's involvement in the Peace Council established by the president Donald Trumpstating that he wanted to contribute to the reconstruction of Gaza after two years of war.

Speaking in Washington at an event organized by the Atlantic Council, Ajay Banga emphasized that the World Bank sought to play a "constructive" role in supporting the economic recovery of the Palestinian territory. He specified that this participation was in line with a UN Security Council resolution calling for the mobilization of financial resources for Gaza.

This Peace Council, launched by Donald Trump, aims in particular to coordinate international efforts to finance reconstruction. A dedicated fund has reportedly already raised approximately $7 billion, although total needs are estimated at up to $70 billion.

Ajay Banga's presence on this body drew criticism, with protesters disrupting his speech and calling for his resignation. He nevertheless emphasized that the World Bank was also undertaking separate actions to support Gaza, in addition to its participation in this framework.

Alongside Banga, several American political figures are participating in this initiative, including Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff. Despite the controversies, the World Bank maintains that it wants to focus its efforts on the reconstruction and economic stabilization of a territory heavily affected by the conflict.
