Shooting in Kyiv: eight wounded still hospitalized, controversy erupts over police response

Eight people, including a child, remain hospitalized in Kyiv following the shooting that left six dead, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced. The victims are currently receiving treatment, some still in critical condition.

The attack occurred when a man of Russian origin opened fire on passersby with an automatic rifle before barricading himself inside a supermarket and taking hostages. After approximately 40 minutes of unsuccessful negotiations, law enforcement stormed the store and killed the suspect.

Among the injured is a child whose parents were killed in the attack. According to the mayor, the child's condition is stable, while an adult remains in critical condition.

The case quickly took on a political and security dimension. Images circulating on social media showing police officers fleeing the scene at the start of the operation sparked a heated controversy, leading to the resignation of the patrol officer's chief.

The Chairperson Volodymyr Zelensky It was reported that the shooting left a total of 14 people injured. Authorities have launched an investigation, including to determine how the shooter obtained a firearms permit.

On site, the supermarket remains closed and cordoned off by police. Bullet holes and visible bloodstains still bear witness to the violence of the attack, a rare event in a capital already marked by war-related tensions.
