Several staff members were injured Thursday at Frankfurt Airport after the unexpected collapse of the nose landing gear of a Lufthansa Boeing 787, the airline said. The incident occurred while the aircraft was parked at a gate and passengers had not yet boarded.
According to a company spokesperson, crew members and ground staff were on board the aircraft at the time of the accident. Several were injured and received medical treatment. The aircraft involved was scheduled to operate flight LH450 to Los Angeles.
Images taken at the scene show an aircraft partially resting on its fuselage, surrounded by emergency vehicles. A Reuters photographer present at the scene described a large-scale rescue operation around the aircraft, a twin-engine Boeing 787 long-haul jet.
The American manufacturer Boeing said it was aware of the incident and was providing support to its customer, without giving further details on the circumstances of the landing gear failure.
The accident occurred shortly before 12:45 PM (local time), according to information released by Lufthansa. The exact cause of the malfunction remains unknown and is currently undergoing technical investigation.
This incident comes amid increased scrutiny of air operations and could reignite safety concerns around long-haul aircraft, even though no structural cause has yet been identified at this stage.
