Gaza flotilla: Israel extends detention of two activists despite international criticism

An Israeli court has decided to extend until May 10 the detention of two activists arrested during the interception of a flotilla bound for Gaza. This decision comes amid diplomatic tensions and growing controversy surrounding the operation.

The two activists were part of a larger group aboard a flotilla intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters near the Gaza Strip. While around a hundred people have been released in Greece, these two activists remain detained in Israel.

The court ruled that the accusations of alleged links to a terrorist organization were sufficiently credible to justify continued detention. Israeli authorities have not publicly disclosed the specifics of the charges at this stage.

For their part, the defense lawyers strongly contest these accusations, which they consider unfounded, and demand the immediate release of their clients. They also denounce the conditions of detention, alleging abusive treatment.

Israel has rejected these allegations, denying any acts of torture and stating that detainees are treated in accordance with applicable standards.

The case has sparked international reactions, notably from Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who called the detention of a Brazilian national an "unjustifiable action." This situation illustrates the ongoing tensions surrounding initiatives supporting Gaza and Israeli security responses.
