Faced with the Russian threat, Ukraine is urging Europe to equip itself with a ballistic missile defense system.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky On Sunday, the UN called on European countries to develop a common ballistic missile defense system, arguing that the continent needed to strengthen its capabilities in the face of a growing threat. Kyiv indicated that it was already in discussions with several partners regarding the implementation of such a system.

This statement comes amid a protracted war with Russia, where air defense remains crucial for Ukraine. Ballistic missile attacks pose a major challenge to Ukrainian forces, which have limited means to effectively intercept them.

To date, only certain systems, notably those supplied by the United States such as Patriot batteries, are capable of neutralizing this type of missile. This technological dependence, according to Kyiv, underscores the need for Europe to develop its own independent defense capability.

Volodymyr Zelensky thus emphasized the importance of a coordinated European response to evolving military threats. The objective would be to strengthen the continent's security while reducing dependence on foreign systems.

The discussions initiated by Ukraine with several European countries aim to lay the groundwork for enhanced cooperation in this strategic area. However, no specific details have been released regarding the countries involved or the timeline for this project.

As Russian strikes continue to target critical infrastructure in Ukraine, the issue of missile defense is emerging as a central challenge for Kyiv, but also for the whole of Europe, which is facing an increasingly unstable security environment.
