Taiwan announced Monday that it had repelled a Chinese research vessel accused of conducting "illegal" operations near the island, in the latest episode illustrating the growing tensions between Taipei and China.
According to the Taiwanese coast guard, the Chinese vessel named "Tongji" was spotted last Thursday about 29 nautical miles southeast of the southern tip of Taiwan, just outside the island's regulated waters.
Taiwanese authorities say the vessel, which entered service last year, was conducting suspicious operations. Ropes were reportedly lowered into the water, suggesting the deployment of scientific equipment for marine surveys considered illegal by Taipei.
In response, the Taiwanese coast guard dispatched one of its vessels to disrupt the Chinese ship's operations. According to their statement, the Taiwanese vessel created wake interference and broadcast radio messages demanding the "forced expulsion of the vessel" and the immediate cessation of search activities.
Taiwanese authorities indicate that the "Tongji" has finally recovered its instruments and left the area after changing course.
This incident comes amid increasing pressure from Beijing on Taiwan. For several years, the island's authorities have denounced a rise in Chinese military, air, and maritime activities near their territory.
China considers Taiwan a Chinese province destined to be reunified with the mainland, by force if necessary. Taipei firmly rejects Beijing's claims and asserts its sovereignty.
The operations of Chinese research vessels are attracting particular attention from Taiwanese authorities, who fear that some scientific missions may also have strategic or military objectives.
This latest maritime incident comes just days before the summit between the American president and the US president. Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, a meeting followed with concern in Taipei.
