Former Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem has been released from custody in the United States after being arrested by immigration services, according to sources close to the case.
Ramagem was arrested on Monday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), after fleeing his country in September following his conviction for alleged conspiracy to stage a coup involving former President Jair Bolsonaro.
His release was confirmed by a US-based political ally, and his name was removed from the official ICE detention list. US authorities, however, did not immediately comment on this development.
The precise circumstances of his release and his current immigration status remain uncertain, according to available information. It is unclear at this stage whether he is subject to further proceedings or restrictive measures.
This case is taking place in a sensitive political context in Brazil, marked by investigations targeting figures close to Jair Bolsonaro, suspected of having participated in attempts at institutional destabilization.
Alexandre Ramagem's situation could therefore have diplomatic and legal repercussions, as Brazilian and American authorities may be required to coordinate their actions in this complex case.
