The head of U.S. border patrol, Michael Banks, abruptly resigned Thursday, adding to the upheaval among immigration officials in the president's administration. Donald Trump.
No official explanation has been given for this departure. A spokesperson for the agency simply confirmed the resignation of Michael Banks, who had headed the organization responsible for monitoring US borders since January 2025.
According to former Border Patrol agents, Banks was close to former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was fired by Donald Trump last March. Before returning to Border Patrol under the Trump administration, Michael Banks had worked for nearly twenty years at the agency before becoming Texas's immigration policy chief.
His departure comes at a time when the White House's immigration strategy appears to be going through a turbulent period. Several senior officials involved in immigration and border control operations have left their positions in recent months.
The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Todd Lyons, is also due to leave his post at the end of the month. Gregory Bovino, a controversial figure in the Border Patrol, retired in March, while Tom Homan, in charge of border issues at the White House, saw his powers strengthened.
This wave of departures also comes at a delicate political time for Donald Trump, as public support for his immigration policy appears to be waning. Immigration control operations conducted in several major American cities are drawing increasing criticism and fueling the debate over the Republican administration's border management.
