United States: The Trump administration eliminates agreements protecting transgender students

The President's Administration Donald Trump announced the termination of several civil rights agreements made in favor of transgender students, marking a further hardening of its policy on education and LGBTQ+ rights.

The U.S. Department of Education has announced the termination of six settlement agreements signed under previous administrations with certain school districts. These agreements aimed to protect transgender students from discrimination, relying on Title IX, a federal law prohibiting discrimination in education "on the basis of sex."

Current authorities believe these agreements were reached through a misinterpretation of the law. This decision is part of a series of measures taken since Donald Trump's return to power, targeting policies related to transgender rights, diversity, and other social issues.

Since taking office, the administration has exerted pressure on schools and universities, notably by threatening to suspend federal funding for institutions that do not comply with its guidelines. Several executive orders have also been adopted to restrict the rights of transgender people.

Among these measures is a directive stating that the federal government now recognizes only two sexes, male and female. This direction has drawn sharp criticism from civil rights advocates, who denounce it as a rollback of protections for gender minorities in the United States.
