New revelations point to escalating tensions between the United States and Israel in the intelligence sphere. According to reports by NBC News, the U.S. Department of Defense has raised its assessment of Israeli counterintelligence threats to the highest level, due to growing concerns about Israeli intelligence activities on American soil.

Citing three former US officials speaking on condition of anonymity, the media outlet claims that the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) recently released an internal assessment classifying the threat posed by Israeli intelligence capabilities at the "critical" level, the highest on its scale.

According to these sources, this decision comes amid heightened tensions related to regional conflicts involving Israel, Iran, and the United States. Officials believe that Israeli intelligence services are seeking to obtain information on the internal discussions and decision-making processes of senior American officials regarding these sensitive matters.

The same sources claim that the Pentagon's concerns stem from several recent incidents considered to go beyond the intelligence activities typically observed between allied countries. Israeli human and technical intelligence capabilities were reportedly singled out in the DIA's assessment.

However, these accusations are firmly rejected by the relevant authorities. The White House called the reports "baseless," while the Pentagon declined to comment on the allegations. For its part, the Israeli embassy in Washington also denied any espionage activity targeting the United States.

If confirmed, this information would illustrate an unusual distrust between two long-standing strategic allies. It also underscores the sensitivity of intelligence matters in a regional context marked by persistent tensions in the Middle East and growing disagreements between Washington and Tel Aviv on several security issues.
