Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his American counterpart on Wednesday Donald Trump He believed that a settlement of the disputes between Washington and Tehran was possible, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency.
During a telephone conversation, Erdogan welcomed the extension of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, believing that the problems opposing the two countries could be resolved through diplomacy.
Turkey, a NATO member and neighbor of Iran, is currently playing a mediating role in regional discussions. Ankara is in close contact with Washington, Tehran, and Pakistan, which is seen as an intermediary in efforts to maintain the truce.
For several weeks, Turkey has been calling for de-escalation in the Middle East and trying to promote dialogue to avoid a resumption of the conflict. However, tensions remain high following recent US threats of further strikes against Iran if no lasting agreement is reached.
Turkish authorities believe that an escalation of hostilities could further destabilize the region and have significant economic and security consequences for neighboring countries.
