Albania's Constitutional Court ruled on Wednesday that the government's one-year ban on the social network TikTok violated the Constitution and infringed on freedom of expression.
The decision comes after the expiration last month of the suspension which had prevented access to the platform in the country for almost a year.
According to the constitutional judges, the measure adopted by the authorities was not in accordance with the fundamental guarantees provided for by the Constitution, particularly with regard to freedom of expression and access to information.
The case had sparked a debate in Albania on the balance between regulating social networks and protecting citizens' fundamental rights.
The court's decision is a setback for the government, while strengthening the position of those who advocate strict legal regulation of restrictions targeting digital platforms.
