Le président américain Donald Trump offered to help find a settlement to the conflict in Ukraine during a phone call of about 90 minutes, according to a senior Kremlin official.
According to Yuri Ushakov, Vladimir Putin's diplomatic advisor, the conversation, described as "constructive and professional," took place ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for next week in Turkey. Donald Trump reportedly reaffirmed his commitment to a swift resolution of the conflict and offered US support in diplomatic efforts.
According to the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin indicated that Russia favored a "political and diplomatic" solution, while emphasizing the need to consider Moscow's fundamental interests. He also accused Ukraine and some of its European allies of seeking to prolong or escalate the conflict.
Russian authorities have also claimed that their forces continue to advance on the ground, particularly around the strategic town of Kostiantynivka. However, this version is disputed by Kyiv, whose president Volodymyr Zelensky assures that Ukrainian forces retain control of the city.
Shortly after his conversation with Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump also spoke by phone with Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian president described the conversation as "very positive" and said there was a "real prospect" of ending the war. The two leaders are expected to continue their discussions at the NATO summit.
