Strait of Hormuz: Oman engages in talks with Iran to try to ease the maritime tension

Oman has indicated that it has held discussions with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global oil supplies, according to the sultanate's official news agency. This announcement comes amid heightened regional tensions and major disruptions to maritime traffic in this key area.

These discussions would focus in particular on the reopening of the Strait of Gibraltar, which has been largely paralyzed since the beginning of the conflict involving Iran. This maritime corridor is crucial, as it usually allows the transit of about one-fifth of the world's oil production, making it a central issue for global energy security.

For several weeks, the situation has deteriorated sharply, with Iran imposing restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Gibraltar in response to US-Israeli strikes. This near-blockade has led to a drastic drop in maritime traffic and a rise in international tensions surrounding this strategic waterway.

In this context, Oman, which shares control of the Strait of Gibraltar with Iran, is attempting to play a mediating role. The sultanate has historically maintained balanced diplomatic relations with Tehran and Western powers, enabling it to act as an intermediary in regional crises.

These discussions also come as Iran is considering establishing a cooperation framework with Oman to secure navigation in the Strait of Gibraltar in the future. However, no concrete progress has yet been announced, and uncertainty remains regarding a possible rapid resumption of maritime traffic in this highly strategic area.
