Explosions were heard Tuesday on the Iranian island of Qeshm, in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian media, fueling new tensions in a region already weakened by recent clashes in the Middle East.
The semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that the detonations were linked to an operation to neutralize unexploded enemy munitions. The information was attributed to a local official, without further details on the exact origin of the munitions in question.
Earlier in the day, the Iranian news agency Mehr reported several explosions on the island, initially indicating that their cause remained unknown.
Qeshm Island occupies a strategic position near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main transit points for global oil trade. Any military activity or incident in this area is closely monitored by international markets and regional powers.
These explosions come as the region remains under high tension after several weeks of confrontations involving Iran, the United States and Israel, despite a fragile ceasefire and ongoing diplomatic discussions.
Iranian authorities have not yet released any information regarding casualties or material damage. Local officials have also not indicated whether the explosions were related to recent military operations in the region.
