US lawmakers are bypassing their leadership to try to force a vote on aid to Ukraine

Members of the US House of Representatives have launched a rare procedure to try to force a vote on new military aid to Ukraine, defying Republican leaders close to the president. Donald Trump.

This initiative takes the form of a "discharge petition", a parliamentary mechanism allowing elected officials to bypass the House leadership in order to force the examination of a text in plenary session if enough signatures are collected.

According to Reuters, the proposal would include several billion dollars in aid and loans for Kyiv, as well as significant new sanctions against Russia.

US aid to Ukraine has slowed sharply since the start of Trump's second term, causing growing divisions within Congress between lawmakers who favor maintaining military support and those who want to reduce US involvement in the conflict.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to plead with US officials for additional military and financial assistance in the face of the Russian invasion.

Discharge petitions are rarely used successfully in Washington, because they require the support of an absolute majority of the House, including members of the majority party.
